Other professional Tango teachers and/or couples will be invited to come by and give workshops. During these three months I will be your host/teacher.
I'm inviting everybody that would like to learn to Tango but never did, to come and have a go at the first steps; and everyone else already taking part in the Tango community around the world to take a trip to beautiful Goa to enjoy a Tango-filled tropical holiday!

Goa can be found on the south-western side of India. It is the smallest state of India with Panjim as its capital. It is a long strip of palm-fringed coastline, with beautiful soft white sand beaches, lapped by the warm waters of the Arabian Sea. On top of that it boasts tropical forests, happy smiling locals and lots of exciting tropical delights.

Tangoa is located around one of the best known northern beaches called Anjuna. To westerners Goa has long been famous mostly for its beautiful beaches and a very liberal lifestyle which has evolved since Anjuna was discovered by the Beatles in the sixties. Besides the chilled out beach life and famous rave parties, there are a lot of other things happening during the winter months in Goa.
All along the northern beaches: Anjuna, Vagator, Morjim, Ashwem etc. there are lots of high level yoga classes-and retreats on offer. From Ashtanga to Vinyasa style yoga all types of yoga are catered for, taught by professional-western- teachers.
( check out Brahmani Yoga and Purple Valley retreat ). And of course there are meditation courses and Ayurvedic massage as well for total relaxation.
For the more adventurous there is kitesurfing and paragliding. If you travel inland from the beaches, Goa has beautiful wildlife and a rich, Portuguese and Hindu cultural heritage.

Tango is fairly new to India, but in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore thriving Tango communities are becoming part of the ever expanding global Tango family. If you happen to be around India or are heading that way between December and March 2010, come and enjoy some Tango fun in Goa! Don't forget to bring your dancing shoes ;-)

Regular updates on this blog about classes and milonga and on TanGoa facebook group.
If you're interested in TanGoa or have any questions related to accomodation, flights, prices, yoga etc. please, send me an email at kallos.alex@gmail.com and I would be more then happy to point you in the right direction!

Hope to see you soon in a 'sunset-palmfringed' milonga in Anjuna !

until then,
Happy milonqeuando!

TanGoa - tango en India, version en castellano

TanGoa

Viernes milonga : entrada 200 rupees, 21.30-00.30 hs

Feliz milonqueando!

Sitges, july 09

hola todo Queridos,

i havent posted for a [longish] while.
But i have been very busy dancing and travelling and creating all sorts of things.
But here are some updates from the latest tango events in my life: the Tango festival Sitges july 09, absolutely unforgettable!
The dancing, the stars ;-), the orchestra (Color Tango), the beach, the sangria and last but not least, the after-hour, allnight milonga on the pier-promenade. Una passada..!
What a pleasure to be once again in the presence of the allstar line-up from the absolute top of the current tango Pantheon -
Chicho Frumboli y Juana Sepulveda, Sebastian Arce y Mariana Montes, and Alejandra Hobert y Damian Veredice....

Then in september a very animated, dynamic 10 th edition of Barcelona's own TangoNeta.
Thank you, Gisela, Dj Fredi, Connexion Tango group and all the others for a very cosy, sweaty, inspired 2 day milonga experience.

In October Mallorco Tangofestival is the latest in line. Organised by argentinian local Ariel Yurgevich.
Second time lucky this year, and an honour to be watching some of the starcouples previously at work in Sitges and Lisboa, now strutting their irreperable styles overhere, both in classes and on the milonga floor. Sebastian, Chicho and relative newcomers , hot couple Pablo y Noelia.
Que pinta, que suerte..

i rest my case and
keep on happy milonqueando ;-)

Pina Bausch RIP

In memoriam- Pina Bausch, 1940-2009

It was with shockItalic and great sadness i learned,  that the  unforgettable, worldfamous german choreographer/dancer Pina Bausch passed away.
Only five days after she was diagnosed with a condition of cancer.
For me personally, she was one of the main motivations for becoming a dancer and long after i stopped dancing as such, her many beautiful works and performances never ceased to move and inspire me in my life as an artist.
One of the flowers of the stage-decor from ' Nelken' [ Carnations], performed in Amsterdam in 1995  i think, adorned my bedroom mirror and was treasured by me as a truly vintage Pina relic !
Needless to say i have many, many happy memories of her shows, seen in many different places, of which the ones in Buenos Aires and Amsterdam stand out.

It must be gettin' crowded up that dancefloor in the heavens..
Now with  Michael  and Pina  and all the greats that went before them,
they must be gettin' quite a party going on !

Meine tolle Pina [my beloved Pina]
Rest in peace and in my heart,
...Nein, noch nicht gehen, noch ein Weinchen, noch eine Zigarette, nein, noch NICHT GEHEN..*

*english:... no, do not go, just one more glass of wine, just one more cigarette, no,  do NOT GO...
My favourite line from the piece 'Valser'

Milonga is a living thing..

Lisbon, May 2009
During the days of this years edition of Lusitango the temperatures were high.
This came as a bit of a surprise cause of its stark contrast with the past three (!) years when it was rather chilly and rained most of the time.  The incessant drizzle making the portugese capital look like the perfect image dreamed up in a typical, somewhat depressive Fernando Pessoa poem.
With summerhigh temperatures the HEAT was on in the milonga. Resulting in unusual sticky sweating around the pista, for the Voz de Operario, the name of the  quaint, old building housing the tango venue, is not fitted with modern airconditioning.
And maybe the temperatures were the only high this year.
In my own modest opinion, the festival this year fell a bit short on its reputation.
Maybe it was the orchestra, 'El Silencio' originating from Berlin, that failed to inspire.
I can't put my finger on it but somehow me and most dancers choose to sit out the tangos played live by the musicians rather then being drawn in to create some sensuous moves on the dancefloor while defying the heat.
Or maybe it was the lack of participants. There was definately a drop in visitor numbers, creating visible gaps in the milonga. Now gaps on the dancefloor are not necessarily a bad thing!
But it can have a downside in relation to atmosphere. Im sad to say there just wasn't a very animated ambiance.

Una milonga no bien animada- now that brings me to something close to my heart.
Something that i always try to convey: that a milonga is a living thing.
That its not only about the size or the look of a milonga, or the amount of people participating.
Its all about the energy that we SHARE. A milonga as such merely provides the space, the dancefloor, music etc.  Now, a good dj can surely inspire. When he- or she- is in a good mood, in the right mood better said, and really feels the energy in the milonga , their music can really inspire, set the place 'on fire'. But thats when the dj really connects  with the milonga. Thats an interesting point, because that implies that the dj is conscious of the energy in the place. The energy grows in intensity when  people in the milonga are truly present. Theres consciousness again! So for a milonga to be truly  dynamic and inspirational, to become this living thing  i think its more a situation of 'give and take'. In an ideal situation, WE, the participants should get conscious upon entering a milonga and connect with our own, individual energies and decide what mood or vibe we wish to bring to the milonga. So by not expecting or assuming  the music and surroundings of the space to simply deliver us a perfect dance event (taking), but by being  aware of our own individual energies thus contributing something positive to something bigger then ourselves (giving), we are consciously taking the first steps towards manifesting a living, breathing milonga
Connection, energy, consciousness and sharing are the key words here!
Ademas, if we extend that awareness to our -own- dancepartners, aswell as the other dancers on the floor and move around the pista with respect for each other, letting the tandas guiding us into inspired, new tango territory, we're getting ever closer to honoring a so called milonga etiquette.
In my opinion by incorporating all of the above, we are laying down the groundrules, creating a cosmic  blueprint if you will, for a milonga thats far more than the sum of its parts.
If that level of consciousness is the starting point, we stand a good chance of creating a truly inspirational, supercharged milonga !
Thus becoming an active part of a 'total' experience,  an amalgamation of great tango-dance vibes, people vibes and Zen vibes.... something that truly lifts us all onto  HIGHER ground.
Amen. (broma/joking)
Soon coming to a milonga near you ;-)

Happy milonqueando!

la Glorieta-tango in Ciutadella parc

Spring is in the air in Barcelona...For tango lovers that means the Glorieta is about to open again!
The  sunday milonga in Ciutadella Parc. It be fair to say that for many dancers here and especially for me personally, its one of the favourite milongas.
In the open air located in the middle of the parc,  next to the fountain, up in the bandstand ( la glorieta) its almost  too good to be true. A great selection of music, the lazy sunday -afternoon-in the parc with ur friends vibe makes for a very seductive, steamy milonga indeed.
During the summer months the fountain is lit up by little fairy lights, ducks swim around in its pool. An enthousiastic group of regular tangoers meet up at the round, wooden venue amidst lots of hugs and kisses.
To hours of inspiring tandas they embrace and dance thus forming an ongoing spectacle for surprised passers-by and intrigued unlookers.

Another very popular milonga sunday afternoons and serious 'competition' to the Glorieta is   Milonga Gratalonga at Maremagnum shoppingcenter- Sunsetbar, 18.00/22.30 -organised by Maxi. info gratalonga@gmail.com
Other regular milongas on sundays : Milonga del angel by Norma  in
Gracia , Club 7 a 9 by Josep and Teresa at Cartagena and Media Luna by Martin at 'El Desbande' also in Gracia.

All pictures were taken during tango in the parc 2008.

Happy milonqeando!

tango performance Goa 2009

As mentioned in the previous post, i recently spent some time travelling in India and giving tango classes in Goa.
In the last month of my stay, last January, i was asked to do a little performance in a place called Aquatica. It had recently opened on a beautiful spot located on Ashwem beach, north Goa. Its a restaurant/loungeclub where they serve the very best authentic Indian cuisine and  they have various dj's spinning cool dancemusic. They also host the occasional all night parties.
Doing the show was great fun, as the pics show. One of my students and
long time tango aficionado Roger White formed my dancepartner for the occasion.

I will be back later this year in Goa engaging in various tango activities- check out this blog for latest info and updates on classes and milongas in Goa dec 2009/ jan.2010-
But if ur travelling around India anyway you can always check out the local tango scenes in Bombay, Delhi and Bangalore at www.tangoindia.in

In Bombay  i recommend getting in touch with Tim and Malou, a very active, dynamic young couple teaching lindyhop and tango. learn@lindyhopindia.com
In New Delhi contact Stina Almroth at stinadelhitango@yahoo.com

Happy milonqeando!

Tango is rapidly becoming a serious global phenomena. Even in places like India they have embraced this famous argentine dance. I had the pleasure to spend some time this winter in Goa, famous for its hippy beaches discovered in the sixties.
In  a yoga/pilates studio neatly situated between Anjuna and Vagator beach
i set up my tango classes. Twice a week. The friday class was followed by a guided practica.
The students formed a wide array of inernational long and short term visitors to Goa.
Imagine: daily beachlife, coconut grooves, lovely locals, attractive travellers, fabulous food, (trance)parties and....tango!

In fact it was so tasty, im already planning  my trip for next winter 2009/10!
If all goes according to plan, I'll be back in Anjuna/Goa around dec.2009. There will be more classes, different levels, milongas and the occasional performance.. It seemed that amongst all the -highly recommendable- yoga, meditation, kitesurfing, deltaflying etc. already on the menu, my very own special blend of 'spicy' tango went down very well!
So if you're thinking of hidding out that direction, and interested in brushing up on your tango or just always wanted to learn it, heres your chance.
Get ready for serious sunset milongas. And don't forget to bring the shoes :-o

Just keep checking this blog for any news/updates on the Goan tango experience !

Tuesday 14 April 2009

A todos !
My regular group classes are suspended untill 21 st of April, due to the festive irregularities in the calendar this month!
All private classes are going ahead as scheduled.( By appointment only)

The good news is that the month of April always brings lots of tango activities to Barcelona.
Thanx to the local festivals BioTango( 9/12 April) at La Pantera Rosa and TangoNeta
(16/18 April).
First one up was the Biofestival/Pantera Rosa. There was much tango joy to be had. Full milongas and good music by dj Sebastian Grenschpun.
This thursday TangoNeta kicks off at the Civic Center in Barceloneta. This is becoming a 'classic', this being already the ninth edition. The organisers of TangoNeta busily hosting two occasions, one in April and the other in September every year. Traditionally there is  live music at the saturday milonga and music by dj Fredy.
These festivals tend to draw in lots of exciting tango aficionados not only from Barcelona and surroundings and the rest of Spain but especially from abroad.
Only adding to the ever growing number of tango venues in this city.
And definately putting Barcelona firmly on the map as a new, emerging tango capital in Europe alongside its bigger tango-siblings Paris and Berlin.

Shortly i'll be posting news on my workshops in a small town in the Emporda.
And i will update links to tango festivals local & global.
In the meantime u can always check out
http://festivals.tango.info for all the latest worldwide info on  festivals and tango activities.

Happy milonqeando!
